News: In Memoriam- Marjolein Whittaker

Published 10th February 2025

The following is taken from a message written by Liz Perkins (Bridge Convenor):

It is with great sadness that I have to inform you that Marjolein has died, aged 95, following an injury & subsequent illness.

She was one of the founder members of the Cardiff u3a Bridge group & for many years its convenor. She did a sterling job & welcomed new members, like myself, with patience & kindness.

After Covid she decided to pass on the convenor’s duties & I agreed to do it, very tentatively because she was such a hard act to follow. Much to my relief, she still joined us for most of the Bridge sessions.

Many of the newer members may not have played with her as she preferred to play at the “senior” table with people she knew well. We agreed that she’d earned the right to choose her spot. Marjolein was often heard to chuckle loudly when the Bridge game didn’t go to plan.

A lot of the older players will remember, with great fondness, her 90th birthday celebration one Monday morning. There were flowers & cake, & photographs were taken. Also remembering her delicious home made, Dutch biscuits, which she was still baking & sharing last year.

She was a “grand slam” of a lady & our heartfelt condolences go to her three lovely daughters.
