Middle Eastern Dance

Contact the Convenor : Liz Perkins

Please note that there will be no meeting in February but there will be a meeting on Thursday 29th January at 11am.

This is a new group beginning in November 2025.

Middle Eastern dancing goes back as far as ancient Egypt.

The music used derived from Egypt, Turkey, Algeria and some Eastern European countries but there are more current songs that can be used for variety , for example,  Shakira’s “Whenever, Wherever” and  Sting’s “ Desert Rose”.

Women used Middle Eastern Dance movements to enhance their fitness and flexibility; especially for childbearing. There have also been some famous male dancers in the genre.

It involves both rotation of the pelvis horizontally, and lift & fall of the hips vertically.

The arms & shoulders are added to enhance the appearance; also neck & hip slides.

Middle Eastern Dance does not need to involve a lot of movement across the floor; small steps are used to facilitate the dances.

This type of dance is suitable for most people provided they do not have hip or spine problems.
