Slow Train Coming

Caerphilly

The Slow Train Coming group’s inaugural trip took place on Feb 2nd 2023 up to Caerphilly. We think those attending numbered about 35 though the group photo looks smaller as there were little ones at the back! The route was one adapted from Peter Finch’s book ‘Walking the Valleys’ and was about four miles in total, but was such that people could drift away at different points.

We started with a stroll from the station down to the castle and had a number of stops for short talks at:

Caerphilly train tunnel – the building of and Cefn Onn abandoned station.

Malcolm Uphill plaque – First person to ride the Isle of Mann TT course averaging 100 mph.

Geese and Jackdaw Guardian sculptures by Julie Westerman.

Medieval Courthouse – now a pub.

Tommy Cooper statue – born here in Caerphilly, unveiled by Sir Anthony Hopkins.

Some people broke away at this stage and visited Caerphilly Castle. Those remaining walked around the circumference of the castle and over to Morgan Jones Park for a few more chats:

Caerphilly Castle – 2nd largest UK castle. Restored by 4th Marquess of Bute.

Morgan Jones –  first conscientious objector elected to Parliament.

Energlyn Corn Mill – with its double wheels, demolished around 1940.

The Big Cheese – A cheese sample and how the texture of Caerphilly cheese has changed over time.

Back in town it was then time for a spot of lunch.

Those with some fuel left in the tank went up to Van Mansion and a chance encounter with the owner who generously gave us 20 minutes of his time explaining a bit of history and a bit about the restoration.

People seemed to pick up on the relaxed nature and flexibility of the event and will hopefully consider coming on another trip sometime.

Barbara Sparkes captured the day in a lovely piece of art.  Thank you Barbara.
