Photography Group (Morning)

Enquiries about the Group: Jonathan Guest

The Photography Group (Morning) has something to offer all our members who have an interest in taking better digital photographs. Some want to enjoy themselves going out on photo-shoots with like-minded companions and sharing their enjoyment and knowledge of photography, and others to learn how take better photos and do more with their camera and their photographs.

You might also like to take a look at Cardiff u3a’s Practical Photography group which meets alternate Wednesdays but in the afternoon.

Having an expensive camera is not necessary, as the group will talk about and use all types of devices that we now use to record all aspects our lives.

The group meets twice a month. For details of times and locations of future photo-shoots on the 2nd Wednesday of the month see the Calendar on this page. On the 4th Wednesday of the month we look at some of the photos we took on the photo-shoot, and talk about all things photographic. For more information click on the link at the top of the page.

Your first 10,000 photographs are your worst.

Seeing Double?

Published 28th June 2025

The Photography Group last week reviewed the images that some of them had two weeks previously taken at Llantrisant where in addition to enjoying each others company and wondering at the activities of William Price – an interesting read if you don’t know anything about him – they had embarked upon trying to create images where either they created a double-exposure in their cameras, or they took two (or more) images and subsequently superimposed them using software. Other members who weren’t able to make the trip, chipped in with their images from elsewhere as you can see. The assembled group were so impressed at their achievements that they felt more members of the Cardiff u3a might like to see what they’d been up to. A gallery has therefore been produced for you to view (and marvel at their skills) …

… they next meet at The Knap in Barry on July 9th where (if they so wish to follow the theme) they will be taking “landscapes” – a challenge for that location many of the group felt.

You can also view these as a slideshow by clicking on the arrows in the gallery below …

Park Life

Published 7th April 2025

The Morning group’s trip in March was to the Victoria and Thompson Parks, with the theme of High Key/Low Key. Then at our monthly meeting in the URC our convenor, Jonathan, showed the photos we had each chosen as out ‘top twos’. Later “an esteemed panel of experts” (from Jonathan’s family) chose as our Pick of the Month, the beautiful ‘high key’ camellia, taken by Patrizia.

Briefly, “high-key” refers to bright, evenly lit scenes with minimal contrast, while “low-key” describes scenes with strong contrasts, dark tones, and shadows.
